  13. I don't know whether turning off windows is the answer, but I
  14. would support your view that it needs to be made a bit more
  15. obvious what is turned on, and what you need to do.

  17. I have lost count of the number of times that I have had to remind
  18. myself to turn on sunwindows (I am still tied to a lot of 
  19. obsolescent equipment) after the first compilation is made
  20. with no links except to X11.

  22. Elizabeth and I are toying with a pre-compilation warning that
  23. informs you what windowing systems are active, what could be active,
  24. and invites you to look again at paths.h before going through the
  25. whole compilation.  Either that, or there should be a clear message
  26. that virmf can be recompiled if you got it wrong the first time,
  27. (and that only virmf needs to be compiled.  That might be
  28. best, since paths.h is fully configured by that time.

  30. That still doesn't say whether windowing should be turned off.
  31. I think I would be against turning it off by default.  What happens
  32. to the poor soul who first picks up the Metafont Book 18 months after
  33. a windowless TeX has been set up and the installer has gone off
  34. to another institution?  There he is doing all the right things,
  35. most probably in a perfectly compatible X environment, and virmf
  36. sullenly refuses to let him see what he is doing.  Windowless METAFONT
  37. would have to give you a message such as "what you are doing would
  38. normally be displayed on your screen---character by character,
  39. as each character is formed, but the person who installed me
  40. didn't think anyone would ever be interested in that."
  41. Otherwise it will be intensely frustrating.
